About Sjögren's Syndrome

Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic or lifelong autoimmune disease. Normally, the immune system acts to protect the body from external threats like germs. When a person has an autoimmune disease, the immune system attacks the body instead.

In Sjögren's syndrome, this attack typically starts with the moisture-producing glands, which are called the exocrine glands. Salivary glands are exocrine glands that produce saliva. We all need healthy salivary glands to produce saliva. Exocrine glands also produce moisture needed in the skin, eyes, vaginal area, in the gastrointestinal tract (stomach and intestine) and respiratory tract (airway and lungs). If the exocrine glands fail to create enough moisture, the person may experience a number of uncomfortable symptoms.

Nine out of 10 people diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome are women, with the average age of symptom onset in the 40s. Dryness symptoms associated with Sjögren's syndrome worsen during menopause.

EVOXAC is indicated for the treatment of dry-mouth symptoms of Sjögren's syndrome. EVOXAC is not indicated to treat or prevent Sjögren's syndrome or other symptoms of Sjögren's syndrome.

Causes of Dry Mouth for Patients With Sjögren's Syndrome

The exact cause of Sjögren's syndrome remains unknown. However, scientists believe that genetic factors and certain environmental contacts to certain viruses may increase the risk of developing the syndrome. Though none of these factors are directly associated with Sjögren's syndrome, scientists believe that a link may exist between the syndrome and these factors.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the signature sign of the syndrome is dry mouth. Symptoms of dry mouth may include:

  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, and talking
  • Cracked or sore tongue
  • Dry, burning throat
  • Difference in taste or smell
